Homemade Ranch Dressing with Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt subs in for sour cream and buttermilk in this healthy homemade ranch dressing. There are tons of fresh herbs in there too. You’re going to love this one! Our Salad Dressing series is sponsored by Stonyfield Organic.

So it’s true that you can buy some good dressings at the grocery store. But I tell you, they’re nowhere (nowhere!) near as good as our Homemade Ranch Dressing. Our ranch recipe is packed with bright fresh herbs and once you taste it, you’ll never go back to the bottle.

This ranch dressing recipe uses Greek yogurt and mayonnaise as the base with garlic and plenty of fresh herbs to season. The post also shares information on using ranch seasoning packets or making your own seasoning with dried herbs. If you’d prefer, you can click here to jump straight to the recipe.

Can You Use Store-Bought Ranch From A Packet Here?

Yes. If you want to make ranch dressing with yogurt but want to use a packet of ranch, you can absolutely do that. Here is the recipe:

Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Made With A Packet Of Seasoning: Combine 1 cup mayonnaise and 1 cup Greek yogurt with a 1 oz. packet of ranch seasoning. Optionally, add a clove of minced garlic. Taste and add salt and pepper, if desired. Transfer to the fridge and let rest for 30 minutes so that the seasonings can soften and spread their flavor.

Can You Use Homemade Ranch Seasoning Here?

Yes. If you’d like to make your own ranch seasoning from dried herbs and spices, you can use my recipe for that. Instructions are given for making a 4 ounce batch, and also for making exactly 2 tablespoons, which is the amount in a standard ranch packet and is the amount you’d use here.

Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Made With Homemade Seasoning: Combine 1 cup mayonnaise and 1 cup Greek yogurt with 2 tablespoons of homemade ranch seasoning. Taste and add salt and pepper, if desired. Transfer to the fridge and let rest for 30 minutes so that the seasonings can soften and spread their flavor.

What Dairy Is Used In Ranch Dressing?

Instead of the usual sour cream and buttermilk found in ranch dressing, we opted for mayonnaise and Greek yogurt. Why? Greek yogurt is healthier than sour cream and we always have it and mayonnaise in the fridge. None of us ever has buttermilk. Do you?

Ranch dressing is super-easy to make at home. How do you do it? Chop up the herbs and then mix them, some minced garlic and seasonings, up in a bowl. Done. Nothing to it.

Cover and refrigerate it after making it. The herb and garlic flavors will infuse the sauce the longer it sits. We recommend letting it hang out in the fridge for at least two hours and then giving it a stir before serving.

How To Make A Thinner Ranch Dressing

This ranch dressing is pretty thick, and it can even be used as a dip. But if you want a dressing that is a little bit thinner, the best way to achieve that is to substitute some milk in for 1/2 cup of the mayonnaise or 1/2 cup of the Greek yogurt.

Note that this makes a very thick dressing that can even be used as a dip. If you want it thinner, use some milk or water to thin it down. Add one tablespoon at a time and stir. Taste to make sure there’s enough salt in the end.

Notes

*I quite often like to use 2 cloves of garlic here, but that makes for a very garlicky dressing. I’ve therefore only listed 1 in the ingredient list. You can always start with 1, and then taste the dressing. It’s easy enough to stir in another. Just be aware that if the dressing will be sitting in the fridge for more than a few hours, the garlic flavor might become more intense.
