French Hot Chocolate With Homemade Custard Recipe

Transport yourself to Paris with this decadent French Hot Chocolate recipe made with real chocolate, whole milk, and creamy homemade custard. Note that the custard recipe is above but you can completely omit it or substitute with 1/2 cup heavy cream and a bit of extra sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tsp. powdered sugar
  • Pinch of espresso powder
  • 8 oz. bittersweet chocolate (70% minimum), chopped
  • 1/2 cup custard
  • 1/2 cup whipped cream

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, stir together the whole milk, powdered sugar, and espresso powder. Warm over medium heat while stirring often until very warm but not bubbling.
  2. Remove saucepan from heat and stir in the chopped chocolate. Whether it has fully melted or not, return it to low heat and cook while stirring until it is very warm.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the custard.
  4. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream.
