This is a delicious, creamy, cheesy dip made with cottage cheese that is amazing with tortilla chips and with veggies. Making queso with cottage cheese is a protein-rich alternative to the usual queso.
Cottage cheese queso dip is an easy and delicious snack that only takes a few minutes to blend up. You just need three simple ingredients, plus whatever you’ll be dipping into the queso – like tortilla chips or crackers, or vegetables like bell pepper slices. So tasty!

What Is Cottage Cheese Queso?
You’re essentially going to be pureeing cottage cheese, like for my whipped cottage cheese recipe, along with some shredded cheese and taco seasoning. When you puree cottage cheese for a long time, it becomes smooth and shiny, like sour cream. It’s then great to use in dips, like my cottage cheese green goddess dip, and salad dressings, like this cottage cheese salad dressing recipe.
Adding some shredded cheese and taco seasoning to it gives it a delicious Tex-Mex flavor. It’s so creamy and tasty! I do have some words of warning or caution for you about this dip though, and it’s not simply that it’s addictive, although it totally is. Here we go…
Does It Taste Like Queso?
So, if you search for Cottage Cheese Queso on the internet, you will find something similar to the below recipe. It is a 3 ingredient recipe that went viral on TikTok and then people posted their versions on their sites. I have named this cottage cheese queso dip, as others have done.
However, it doesn’t really taste like queso to me at all, more like a cream cheese taco dip. It’s very tasty, for sure, but I want you to know what it is going to taste like so you aren’t disappointed. If you’re expecting it to taste like the queso you’re used to, it just isn’t going to. Can You Heat This Dip?
Now, I’ll also say that a lot of recipes on the internet have you heat this dip up, either over low heat while stirring constantly on the stove or for short intervals in the microwave stirring in between.
I will tell you that I tried and tried to do this, I even bought different brands of cottage cheese to see if that could be the issue! I tried full-fat cottage cheese and lower-fat options. In all cases, it curdled. And when I say it curdled, I mean it curdled before it was even particularly warm. It still had a good flavor, but not the smooth texture of queso, and the curds were noticeable.
I therefore don’t recommend that you heat this. I have included instructions in the recipe below though if you really want to give it a try. If you do, I’d love to hear how it went in the comments!
What Not To Add To The Queso
The other warning that I will give you is to avoid adding anything acidic to this.
So if you were hoping to stir in some rotel or diced tomatoes, or pickled/jarred jalapenos or anything like that, don’t do it. I put the tiniest bit of rotel on top of a batch as a garnish, and the dip below it immediately curdled. You can see in the video above how instantly it curdled with the addition of tomato. Like, instantly.
Taco Seasoning
The recipe calls for taco seasoning to easily give the queso dip great flavor, you can use store-bought or homemade taco seasoning. Or, you can use 2 teaspoons of ground cumin, 2 teaspoons onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon chili powder, and 1/8 teaspoon salt instead.
