For a touch of fall flavor anytime, try this Pumpkin Spice Butter! The butter is lightly sweetened and is mixed with a touch of pumpkin puree and all those amazing spices.
If you’re obsessed with pumpkin spice season like I am, you’re going to love bringing a little bit of that taste to your toast or pancakes. This compound butter gets a little sweetness with dark brown sugar, which gives it a little bit of a caramelized flavor. Along with classic pumpkin pie spices and a little bit of pumpkin puree, this butter is so deliciously cozy, and it’s ridiculously easy to make.

What Goes In Pumpkin Spice Butter?
To make this tasty butter spread, start with unsalted butter so you can add just the right amount of salt in. Then, the spices are those classic pumpkin pie seasonings, cinnamon and nutmeg. You could instead use homemade pumpkin pie seasoning if you have it on hand, which also includes other spices like ginger and allspice. A tiny pinch of cloves or cardamom is also really nice in this mixture.
Then it’s just a bit of brown sugar. I like getting the dark brown sugar so it adds lots of color and caramel flavor. But whatever brown sugar you have will do.
And then, the pumpkin!
Do I Need Pumpkin?
While many things called pumpkin spice only have the spices, not any actual pumpkin, I think a small amount of pumpkin puree is really delicious here. The creamy texture mixes in well with the butter and adds the perfect hint of fresh pumpkin taste.
Look for plain pumpkin puree in a can, not the pre-sweetened or spiced varieties, which are often labelled pumpkin pie filling. It can often be found wherever canned fruits are located, or can sometimes be with the pie filling ingredients.
If you really don’t want to open a can of pumpkin to only use a tablespoon of puree, you could also simply omit it and just add the sugar and spices. Having said that, my best bit of advice is to open that can of pumpkin, scoop out the tablespoon you need here. And then freeze the rest (pumpkin puree freezes like a dream!) and then use the almost-full-can in a recipe for Pumpkin Pie Bars or some Classic Pumpkin Pie when you next feel like baking.
How To Use Pumpkin Spice Butter
Try it on toast or crackers, or level up your breakfast by topping your pancakes or waffles with it. Double up on fall flavor by spreading some on apple muffins. Yum! And, you can use it in your general baking during the fall season. Add it into your simple recipes for Banana Bread or anything that calls for butter and doesn’t already have these warm seasonings.
