Ingredients

First, you need to choose your bread. I used white bread just like a classic grilled cheese sandwich, but you can use your favorite type of bread. Sourdough bread, whole wheat, and rye all make a great sandwich. In fact, some of my favorite grilled cheese sandwiches use rye bread.

Next, you need to pick the cheese. While there are many varieties you can use, I went with sharp Cheddar cheese. It gives the sandwich a tangier taste, so if you prefer you can switch it out for American cheese or another type. Other cheeses that melt well include Swiss, provolone, mozzarella, and pepper jack. It can be nice to do a combo of two cheeses too for maximum cheesy flavor. If you really want to get fancy, check out my Brie Grilled Cheese Sandwich recipe for inspiration, it has apple slices and fig preserves too!

How To Air Fry Grilled Cheese

To prepare your sandwich, put the slices of cheese between two slices of bread then decide whether you want to use mayo or butter. Check out our article on Butter Vs. Mayo Grilled Cheese to see which makes the best grilled cheese. Both turn out a great grilled cheese โ€“ the mayonnaise version will give you a little more tangier taste and is easy to spread.

Next you need to put sandwich in the air fryer basket and set the temperature for 360ยฐF. Set the time for 5 minutes but flip the sandwich after 3 minutes so it gets crispy and golden brown on both sides.

Of course, many air fryers will only fit one or maybe two sandwiches at a time, so you have to work in batches if you need several. If you need to feed a crowd, try our Oven Grilled Cheese Sandwiches or even Grilled Cheese on the Grill to get them all at once.
