Avocado puréed with cottage cheese makes a delicious, high-protein, silky smooth and creamy spread. It’s the only way I make avocado toast now!
Most people make avocado cottage cheese toast either by layering the two ingredients on toast or by mashing them together. But what you NEED to try is blending the two together instead. It will blow your mind. It turns the mixture into this light and fluffy, whipped creamy spread that you can dollop onto toast or a bagel. I promise, it will be the best avocado toast experience you’ve ever had!

As you probably know, cottage cheese is very trendy right now. I’m delighted by this because I have always love using it in all kinds of ways, like in this cottage cheese salad dressing, cottage cheese chicken salad, and cottage cheese dip.
The reason people want to mix cottage cheese and avocado together is to add the healthy fats from avocado to the high protein content of cottage cheese. It’s a great breakfast to start your day. But also, the two ingredients are delicious and taste incredible together. If you want to make this for either reason, there are a few ways you can do it: purée, mash, or layer.
When I started working on this recipe, I had planned to photograph all three ways and show you how to make all three. However, inspired by the lovely texture of whipped cottage cheese, I decided to start with the puréed version. It was SO GOOD that I decided I didn’t want to waste your time, or mine, going into a lot of detail about the other ways. I will give some details about mashing and layering below, but the results from blending in a blender are so much better so I’d rather spend time on this.
Why Purée Avocado and Cottage Cheese?
So, there are two reasons to blend the avocado and cottage cheese together. First, as mentioned, it’s delicious and has the most remarkable texture. It’s silky and almost fluffy. That is what is shown in the pictures and what I recommend for the best texture.
Second, the mixture can be made up to 3 days ahead. As you probably know, people are always looking for ways to prevent avocados from browning because they discolor so quickly. One of the ways to prevent it is by adding something acidic to the avocado. When you purée avocado with cottage cheese, the lactic acid in the cottage cheese is literally blended right in with the avocado and discoloration is seriously delayed. I also think that the avocado is being diluted by the cottage cheese giving the mixture a less saturated color where it’s harder to notice the browning.
This means that, unlike most other avocado toast mixtures, you can whip up a batch and keep it in your fridge for a few days. This makes it a very convenient version of avocado toast, that you can reach for in your fridge every morning. Or, grab it instead of guacamole next time you want a snack of chips and dip.
Layered And Mashed Avocado Toast
In case you don’t have (or don’t want to dirty) a blender or small food processor, you’ve got a couple other options that will still give you great taste. You can just mash the cottage cheese and avocado together with a fork or you can layer slices of avocado and top with cottage cheese. Let’s start with layering.
For layering, as much as you may see pictures of the cottage cheese on the toast first with the avocado slices on top, that is so hard to eat. People take pictures of it like that because it looks nice, not because it is practical. This is just like I said about Avocado Tomato Toast. For that, putting tomato slices on top of mashed avocado and then biting in, results in avocado squishing out from between the bread and tomato. Not ideal. Similarly here, avocado slices on top of cottage cheese results in cottage cheese squishing out from between the avocado and the toast.
So it’s better to put the avocado slices directly on the toast first and then top with the cottage cheese. The bright side of this is that any small garnishes you’re adding will stick to the wet cottage cheese with its uneven surface, better than to the flatter and drier avocado slices.
If you really want to put the avocado on top of the cottage cheese, I recommend that you chop it up and put the little chunks on top. Then you’re not having to bite through them and there’s less squishing going on.
The other way to make cottage cheese avocado toast is to mash the two ingredients together with a fork. That blends them but it stays chunky and doesn’t get the smooth texture of the whipped version.
Customize Your Avocado Toast
The recipe below is just the basic version with the avocado and cottage cheese seasoned with salt and pepper, but you can add other things to it. It’s amazing with a clove of garlic blended in there or a tablespoon of chopped onion (red onion, white, or green onion). It’s also nice with 1/4 cup of fresh herbs like cilantro or fresh dill. Other seasonings to try are my Avocado Toast Seasoning mix or go in with some Everything Bagel seasoning. Mix any seasonings or seasoning blends in after you’ve finished pureeing the toast.
It’s also nice to add a garnish on top. Try minced chives or chopped green onions, alfalfa sprouts or watercress, cilantro, flaky salt, or coarse black pepper.

Notes
*If you’re going to be garnishing the toasts with salt and/or pepper for that bit of crunch and extra punch of flavor, then reduce the salt in the above recipe to 1/8 teaspoon and omit pepper.
**Sometimes a less powerful blender isn’t able to get the cottage cheese and avocado moving around enough for it to puree. If this happens to you, add 1 or 2 teaspoons of water, stir, and try again.
